A Long Time...

Hi, everyone. Wow, its been a looong time since I posted on my blog! Sorry about that...what a summer we have had! Busy, busy...much more so than I thought it would be! We went to NJ for 3 weeks, came home in a rush and planned for 3 Sundays of VBS for Life Pentecostal Church, did VBS for 3 Sundays (what a LOT of work!) and then raced off to get ready for the school year! Amazing!

God has been good...we are well, we are happy, and we are back into the swing of things.

The girls started school on Wednesday. Merry is in 3rd grade. I cannot believe it! And Kelsey started 2nd grade. Where has the time gone? They are both still on the small side, compared to the rest of their classmates, but I expect that a growth spurt is just around the corner. They certainly don't look like they are 7 and 8 years old!

Questions

When I get to Heaven, I'm going to have some questions.
Lots of them.

Things like: Why do we have mosquitoes? Is there really a need for huge, furry spiders? And why do my girls have such screechy voices at times?

Then I'll have another question: Why do such bad things happen? Is it really necessary to go through some of the trials that take place?

We just had a good friend pass away. He was only 31 years old. He was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue somewhere around February, and it just happened so fast! He leaves behind a family, a wife, siblings, an eight year-old step-son that he adored...why?
Why is it that sometimes God heals and sometimes He says no?
My heart hurts.
Shawn was a great guy. He was a good friend to my husband, and he loved the Lord with all his heart. He suffered so much these past few months that I'm glad he doesn't have to suffer anymore...but why did he have to in the first place?

I know I can't see what God sees...and I'm glad. I'm pretty sure I couldn't handle it. I'm just wondering why...
And someday I'll ask.

Shawn, you will be missed. You were a great friend, and although we didn't want to see you go, we know you are safe in the arms of Jesus. No more pain, no more suffering, no more tears...now you can stand whole and in peace with the Lord.

Merry is my happy little girl. She is very rarely down. This photo really depicts her character. She is a bouncy, talkative, happy little girl. Usually, when she is this happy, she is singing. She will be eight years old in just a few days. I cannot believe that my firstborn is eight! Where have the years gone? She's getting taller and a little gangly, but she is still one of the tiniest girls in second grade. I'm trying to talk myself into buying her clothes more like her classmates wear. Its hard because she is so small, and I want her to remain innocent and naive, in some ways. I don't want her to grow up too quickly.

I think springtime pictures are such fun! I love the brilliant green of the grass and the bright pinks and oranges in the girls' dresses! They are so sweet! I love that my girls are such good friends. I guess those first two years of their lives were worth all the stress. Now I'm glad I had them so close together!

I love this photo. Scott has been teaching Merry how to ride her bike without training wheels. She is almost eight, but very tiny, and has been afraid to try until this spring. He was consoling and encouraging her in this picture, and I love how she has her hand on his shoulder...such love!

We have a beautiful genie that lives at our house. She will grant you THREE wishes! Kelsey is and has been obsessed with the old show, "I Dream of Jeannie". We have watched every episode at least twice, and for Christmas she received her very own Genie Outfit. She's the prettiest genie I've ever seen!

A New Beginning

Tomorrow marks the beginning of something new for our little family.
For several months, Scott and I have been praying, and have been feeling that God is moving us in a new direction. Consequently, we will be leaving our church of ten years (for Scott) and twenty years (for me). This Sunday, tomorrow, will be our last service with New Life Church of Garden City.
This is a bittersweet moment in our lives. We are saddened at the thought of leaving all we know behind, and at the thought that we will no longer see our friends and family every Sunday and Thursday. We know that, although we will see them at other times for fellowship and fun, the weekly visits will end.
On the other hand, we are excited to see what God has in store for us! We feel peace about this decision we have made, and we know that God is, indeed, leading us on to a new beginning, a new adventure in our lives.

We don't know where we will go yet. We will spend the next month or two visiting several churches in Michigan, seeing friends and family that we haven't seen for a long while. We will sit on the pew, soak in the Word of God, and go to the altar, seeking His will for our lives. Where God takes us from there, we don't know, but we trust Him completely.

We pray that you, our friends and family, will hold us up in prayer as we make this change in our lives.
Thank you for all your love and support. To those of you that attend New Life Church, we pray God's blessing on you and the church, and we assure you that we will be with you in spirit, and will be in touch.

We went to the apple orchard today. My mom and dad joined us for a fun family time! We went to the petting zoo, took a lot of pictures, ate donuts and drank cider, and then picked out a pumpkin to take home.

Autumn is the best time of year. The weather was perfect today, and we made some fun family memories.

Today I sit and think of how life changed just eight short years ago.

I remember the terror that I felt..and I remember wondering if my unborn child would live and survive in this cruel world.

I remember the mad scramble to the nearest television to watch footage of this horrible event.

I remember wanting to be as close to my family and my loved ones as possible.

I remember crying and wondering why so many innocent people had to die.

I remember grabbing my Bible and searching for a word of reassurance that all would right itself in the end.

I remember my husband and I making an emergency plan, a plan that would be put into place, should anything like this ever happen again.

I remember hearing that friends, people that I loved, were being sent to fight in a war that was "against terrorism".

But most of all, I remember that through all of this, America stood.

And I am proud to be an American.

I am proud that I can say I live in the greatest country that has ever been.

I am proud that my children are free Americans.

I am thankful.

I am thankful for the protection of God over this nation.

I am thankful for the protection of God over my family.

I am thankful for the peace that God has given us...I am thankful for the peace that God has promised us.

I am thankful that I live in the land of the free, where I can worship as I please, and where I have little fear of persecution for my beliefs.

And so, today, on the 8th anniversary of 9/11, I remember those who lost their lives and loved ones, I stand, proud to be an American, and I kneel, humbly thankful to my God for His continued protection and guidance of this great nation.

This is my dear, dear friend, Delight. She is from Nigeria, and the sister of my heart. She and her husband starting coming to our church almost three years ago, and I have grown so attached to her.
Have you ever met someone that just "got" you? Delight "gets" me. She understands the things that no one else understands. She is so beautiful and loving. And so full of the presence of God.

I am ever so thankful that God brought Delight into my life. She is nwannem nuwye, "my sister".

Sweet Holy Spirit

Yesterday was a great day. I turned 32...not so great...but received a lot of love because of it!
Also, we had church. Now, if you have never visited an Apostolic Pentecostal church, you may not understand what I am going to write next. So, just know, that my life revolves around God...so there will be the occasional blog about church or my beliefs.

Lately, I have been really trying to pray more. I want so badly to be close to God. I read a book a few months ago, a novel, called Havah. This is an extraordinary book about Creation. The whole book is written from Eve's perspective. As I read the book, I felt this tugging at my spirit...an urgency to get closer to God.
I never really thought about it before, but Adam and Eve had the closest relationship with God that has ever been. They actually KNEW Him. They spent time with Him. The Bible said that they would walk in the Garden in the cool of the day, communing with God.
In this book, the way this communion was described was incredible. Adam and Eve did not need to speak any words. They were without sin, at this point, and their minds communicated with God on a level that you and I cannot understand. (Now, I do realize this is fiction, but I do believe that God speaks to us, and if we are still, we can hear His voice. Not unlike what this book describes.)
As I read, I started to cry. I rarely cry while reading books or even while watching movies, but this book stirred my heart. I had to put the book down, and take some time to pray. I asked God to draw me closer to Him, and I asked Him to help me be still, and listen.
Through the spring and summer, I have been praying, each day, that God would continue to draw me closer and that He would continue to work in our city.
Yesterday, at our 10:30 a.m. service, He did just that.
His presence was so strong during worship service and prayer, and there was a feeling of expectancy in the sanctuary. Pastor Smothers got up and preached about "Doing Good". He talked about being a city set on a hill, being the salt of the earth, being a light that shines the Gospel. It was a beautiful sermon, one that really inspired those who heard it.
At the end of the sermon, he called everyone up to the altar. I went on the platform to sing, and the song I chose to sing was "Sweet Holy Spirit".
I cannot describe the sweet presence of God that swept into our sanctuary. The altar was filled, and I heard my brothers and sisters in the Lord singing that beautiful song.
I got so caught up in the song, that I forgot where I was and what I was doing...and the more we sang, the stronger God's presence became.
As we ended the song, I began to cry and pray...I felt such a spirit of unity and peace come over our congregation.
Even now, as I sit here writing this, I can feel God's presence. His gentle and sweet Spirit is here. I pray, that if you have never experienced this, that you would ask Him to reveal Himself to you.
I have never experienced anything better than this.
May your day be full of peace, and may you find THIS peace that I have found.

I am amazed at how much Tyler loves his big brother! And Zach is very good with Tyler...he loves to hug him and cuddle with him.
I guess it helps that Tyler is such a laid-back baby. He rarely cries, and he puts up with Zach's older-brother roughness. Can you tell I love my nephews?

Re-Evaluating

I just found out that a young man I am acquainted with, passed away last night. He had cancer. I believe colon cancer. He was in his mid-thirties, and left behind a beautiful wife and two small children. He was a minister and sang like an angel.

It has reminded me that life is so short. There is no guarantee that any of us will be here tomorrow. I want to take today to remember my loved ones, and to show them how much they mean to me. I want to be able to hug them today, and tell them that I love them.

I want to spend my time showing my loved ones just how much I care.

We had the opportunity to spend some time with Tyler today. He is so big! He rolled over from back to stomach for the first time last night. I can't believe he's already five months old!

The girls had a wonderful time playing with him today. They talked baby-talk to him, helped me feed him, and watched a Baby Einstein dvd with him.

We all went for walk and the girls pushed him the stroller. He fell asleep, and I have decided that there is nothing more beautiful than a sleeping baby. Such innocence and peace...

One morning, the girls arrived at camp and had to wade through a sea of foam to reach their classroom. This is a camp tradition, and always a big surprise for the kids. It is never announced, they just show up one day to a LOT of bubbles. Sometimes it is as tall as the kids, and they have to feel their way to the door.
The girls really enjoyed that!

Swimming is always a big part of our trips to NJ. Camp Briar Hill has two large pools, one that is a two-foot pool for the kiddies, and one that is Olympic-sized for the older kids. We spent a lazy day floating about the pool...and discovered that Meredith can actually swim a little bit! Apparently, those lessons while at camp really work.

American Museum Part Two

It was nice to walk around the museum with Scott's parents. We all enjoyed the family time.

I had to take a picture with this giant tortoise/turtle/whatever. I love turtles, and the girls wanted to pose with me.
Scott wanted to pose next to this weird creature. Apparently he did a report on this particular dinosaur when in school, and was excited to see it in person.

American Museum of Natural History

Our girls are dinosaur enthusiasts. They love anything having to do with dinos. We decided that they were old enough to go to New York City to the American Museum of Natural History, and so, on the 4th of July, we took a little trip.
Kelsey was especially impressed. She had seen the movie, "Night at the Museum" and wanted to see the T-Rex. So, that was our first stop. They wanted to pose with every dinosaur they saw. We had a very fun day at the museum, and the girls will never forget their first dinosaur experience.

Brielle is one of our favorite beaches in NJ. One night, Scott took the girls on an adventure to Brielle. They had never been there before, and he took them down to the ocean and for ice cream. They had a lovely time, splashing in the surf.

Horse Decorating

Camp Briar Hill has a lot of neat things for the kids to do. Our very good friend, Barbara Clune has been the program/special events director there for many years. This year, she was unable to be there because she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The doctors are not giving her much time to live, and we are all very saddened.

Before she got too ill, Barbara organized some of the activities for the camp this year. One of them was a brand new event, Horse Decorating. The kids always enjoy the petting zoo and horse rides, but this year, they were allowed to "decorate" the horses. They were supplied with leis, hats and glitter, as well as brushes for grooming and ribbons for the horses manes.
They LOVED this activity! We are ever so thankful for Barbara and her innovative ideas.

The boardwalk rides were exciting. This is the firs time that the girls rode "big" rides. Gone are the days of kiddie rides. Now come the days of rollercoasters and thrills! I was a nervous wreck watching them on all the "big kid" rides.

We were able to take the girls to the Jersey shore a couple of times. One boardwalk had a lot of rides and games for the girls. They had a wonderful time enjoying the sun and the fun.

Scott's parents own a nursery school and summer day camp. We just spent two and a half weeks in NJ with them, and the girls got to try out the new waterpark at the day camp! They were the first little kids in the waterpark, and they LOVED it! Here are a few pics of the summer fun.

Utmost Gratitude

I am typing this post, just to show my gratitude. I have been thinking about a lot of things lately, and I have the tendency to complain when I see something I don't like, or when things are going the way that I think they should.
In the past few days, I have decided that I am truly, truly blessed. There is nothing wrong with my life.
I have Jesus. I have a beautiful, Godly family. I have good in-laws. I have the most wonderful husband in the world. I have a lovely home, a car to drive, healthy children and a great church home. My children are free to worship and learn about Jesus. I can send them to a Christian school (that costs more than I like, but is totally worth it).
Money problems are minimal, and my marriage is solid and loving.

I cannot complain about one, single thing. So, I won't.
Instead, I will spend this Liberty Weekend thanking God for my freedom and my blessings. He truly is a great God, on one else can compare.

Summertime Frenzy

So...its summertime. Monday was the girls' first day off for the summer, and boy, let me tell you, they are so excited! They don't want to go ANYWHERE, unless its Grampy and Grammy's. They don't want to run errands. They don't want to help me garden. They only want to play, and play, and play.

The entire month of June is crazy for us. Last week was busy with end of school programs and last minute things to do. This week has been full of housework, party-planning for a Discovery Toys party (www.discoverytoys.com) and Kelsey's sixth birthday party. We have lots of family coming into town for the weekend, and so so much to do.
A lady in our church passed away, and I am helping with the funeral dinner tomorrow, plus going on a date night with my husband and some friends. The girls are going to stay with my parents and we are going on a dinner cruise on the Detroit River. Should be lots of fun!

Next week I have the girls' well visits with the pediatrician, and church prayer meetings on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. Thursday night is Bible study at church and Friday night we have a prophecy conference at our church!
Then comes Fathers' Day and our vacation to New Jersey.

So, the summertime frenzy is here, in full force. If you don't hear much from me for the month of June, you now know why.

Little miss Kelsey is going to have a birthday very soon, and she will be six years old. I cannot believe that my baby is going into first grade this fall! She likes to pretend she is grownup, and it kills me! "Stay a baby, baby!"

I bought a catch game for the kids, but the adults took to it quite well! My grandma even got out there to play catch with my cousin, David James! We were all surprised at her dexterity. I had no idea she could throw a ball, let alone catch one! She told us all that she used to love to play volleyball! Really? Amazing! It was a great day.

Today was so beautiful, and we had a great big picnic at my mom and dad's house. All my dad's family was there, and a few other relatives and close friends. My sister and her family came, and we got alot of quality time with each other. I love to see the happy, relaxed faces of my family.

This is pure joy! I love to watch my girls when they are happy. Today was such a beautiful Memorial Day. When the girls went outside this morning, they couldn't contain their joy...they both took off running, and I caught these fantasic shots of them with their feet off the ground!

Childhood is fleeting, it passes by so quickly. I look at my girls, so carefree and happy, and I remember my childhood. They remind me of my sister and me...and of the fun, long days of childhood!

I pray that Scott and I can be the best parents possible to our girls. We were both blessed with very loving families. I hope that we can do a good job, raising our girls up to be good moral people. They are so innocent right now. They barely understand that there is evil in the world.

I want them to grow up, knowing that being a good person is important...that having high morals is a necessity. I want them to be Godly, patriotic American citizens, and always stand up for what is right and true! Right now, they are sweet and kind (most of the time), and believe in God. I love that about my girls. They are friendly and loving toward everyone they meet, no matter color, or religion or economic differences. I hope they stay that way...that we can raise them up to love all people, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Meredith was playing the other day, and I overheard her conversation with her Barbie doll:

"Jesus, You ARE God! And God, You are the Only One that IS!"

That is good theology, right there. I think she's been paying attention in church!

It seems that summer may be here! Today it was so warm that I let the girls play in the sprinkler...they had such a great time, and I got quite a few memorable photos. I love it when they play well together! They are very blessed little girls, to have a sister so close in age. They really are best friends..and sometimes, worst enemies. But if you ask them, they say that they each have the best sister ever.

This is my little angel, Merry. She came downstairs the other day and told me that she was an angel. She found a white turtleneck, a white summer skirt, white socks and then put on these green wings. Isn't she sweet? She can be angelic...occasionally.

Springtime In Our Backyard

Its Springtime in our backyard. That means that the girls want to be outside as much as possible. That also means that the mosquitoes are back with a vengeance, and I am back to keeping a very close eye on Merry. Every time she gets a mosquito bite, it swells up to two or three times the size of normal mosquito bites. She gets feverish, and cranky...ugh. So, the other night she got two or three bites, and I have been monitoring them closely. So far, so good. No signs of infection, but I did go out and buy bug repellent and some little bracelets that are supposed to repel the mosquitoes. We'll see if we can keep the amount of bites minimal! This is my sweet sister and her youngest son, Tyler. He looks just like his Mama, doesn't he?
He's a BIG baby! I love how sweet he is. He rarely cries, but loves to lay on the floor and kick his little feet like crazy!

This is my mom. She is beautiful. She is the best Grammy. She can't get enough of Little Tyler, just like his Auntie Kenna (that would be ME!). Grammy and Auntie Kenna sometimes try to hog the little guy...we just can't help it! I'm very thankful for my beautiful family. God has blessed me beyond belief.

More Family Time

I love Family Time. My sister and her family came for a very short visit last night, and I was able to get a few pictures before they left this afternoon. Here is a picture of me and Tyler. He is now 11 weeks old, and such a beautiful baby!

Zach is totally into sports. That is all he does! He is very good at them, and loves to play soccer and baseball all summer long.

The kids got along just great this time...whew! No fights or silliness...just plain, old fashioned fun. Here they are playing with some PlayDoh out on the patio. They even stopped long enough to give me a smile!

Mari

This is our beloved babysitter, Mari. We have reached a milestone in our relationship with her. She has watched our girls since Merry was a very small baby, and now our ways are preparing to part. Mari graduated from Nursing School this past weekend. We are so proud of her, but it is bittersweet for us. She will be leaving us soon to attend graduate school. We are going to miss her so much! We are thankful, so thankful, for the years we have had her with us. God bless you, Mari! We love you so much!

Family Time

We spend a lot of family time in Tennessee. Our trips there are all about family. My grandparents have always been the type that love to sit and chat or listen to music as a family. We carry on that tradition, even now, when my Granny is unable to join in the conversation. Kelsey spent a lot of time talking to Granny. Showing her pictures and telling her who each person was in the photograph.

Merry spent time twirling and dancing and making Granny laugh.

That's what family is all about. Spending quality time together, listening to each other, and loving each other.

Fishin'

Here are Kelsey and Papa, fishin' off the dock. Kelsey is Papa's little shadow. She likes to follow him around and help him. While Papa was fishing, Kelsey was busy "helping" him by using his net to pull junk out of the water and piling it on the dock. I cannot keep Kelsey clean for long in Tennessee.

Orange Cat

My Papa has a couple cats. They don't actually belong to him, but he takes care of them for a neighbor, and they think he is their daddy. He feeds them minnows and fish heads and a little bit of cat food. They are strictly outdoor cats, and are probably flea-bitten and germy, but my girls LOVE those cats! This is Orange Cat. He doesn't have an official name, but that's okay. He's friendly, and Merry always wants to bring him home with her. The fact that Scott and I are allergic to cats doesn't seem to bother Merry a bit!

Papa

This is Papa-time. Merry and Kelsey LOVE spending time with Papa. He is cleaning fish here, and the girls are watching, and helping him feed the cats. He is the best Papa there could ever be.

Granny

This is my Granny. She is the best Granny in the world. She has Alzheimer's. She doesn't know my name anymore, but the love is still there. She knows that I belong to her, and she loves my girls, just as she always loved me.

Seven Years Old

Merry had a birthday this month. She is seven years old now. I am so sad! She is such a beautiful and talented little girl, and I am proud to be her mommy. She is very artistic. She draws and colors beautiful pictures and can sing like a lark. And seven is such an important age! She is independent and happy, nearly all the time. Isn't she lovely?
